What is the current belief for the purpose of Stonehenge?
There seem to be many stories, about healing or worship or astronomy. What is the best current theory?

I have read some of the current thinking and a lot of it is specifically regarding a relationship with dead ancestors. The summer solstice is the big attraction at Stonehenge, and rightly a celebration of life and our place in the universe. However the winter solstice is also perfectly aligned and would have been a real commitment for an individual to attend - snow, freezing temperatures, no shelter, all for a very brief window of alignment. I think that it was multi-purpose wasn't it? Used for spiritual reasons on the solstices for example, and for meeting and healing (medicine) at other times. Login to reply to comments... |

It was built to be the "x" that marks the spot where the Pandorica was buried! Ok, really... it was likely used for ceremonial/spiritual purposes. There is evidence that people were cremated on some of the stones and it seems the positioning of the stones were designed to line up astronomically, particularly for solstices and equinoxes. It might have also been used to predict eclipses. Login to reply to comments...
