Thanks for all the info guys, I've been reading about them, there is some great info here. It seems that they mostly occur in Australia (Gulf of Carpentaria) but they have been seen elsewhere, like Sable Island in Canada.

I guess that it must be, it just seems very simple and not designed in a way that it would accomplished doing that job well. Shame that I no longer have the pipe. Oh well.
